English Lead .... Ruth Dalton

At St Anne’s School and Sixth Form College, reading, writing and communication is at the heart of our curriculum. We believe that reading is a vital life skill that supports children’s learning across the whole curriculum.

 High quality phonics teaching is at the heart of learning at all key stages, differentiated for those with more sensory and complex needs, securing the crucial skills of word and letter recognition and early writing that, once mastered, enable children to read and write fluently and automatically or recognise signs and symbols in the community to support independence.

The Phonics Programme (SSP) we use is Bug Club Phonics and young people from across the school access high quality phonics teaching daily, or as often as possible. The phonics resources are adapted to suit pupils in all curriculum pathways. Pupils are also encouraged to access Bug Club Phonics and Bug Club independent at home where possible.

Pupils are also encouraged to take part in shared reading activities delivered through a topical class book rolling programme appropriate for age and ability. This is underpinned by a writing rolling programme that encourages pupils to extend their writing skills beyond phonics and explore a variety of writing styles and techniques that encourages creativity and skills for life.

The English curriculum also encompasses a variety of enrichment activities such as;

  • Sponsored reading events
  • Work Experience in the library
  • World Book Week activities
  • Young Writers Competitions
  • A variety of activities on the literacy calendar
  • Collaborative projects with other schools

Thanks to those families who sent them back. Bug Club online at home is an option that we encourage, and we know there are many more pupils using it than those who sent the forms back.
